How Did I Come Up With My List?
I like my Converse shoes. I have the Chuck Taylor All Star Classic and the Chuck 70. Both are great sneakers and I’ve gotten a lot of wear out of them.
But I understand that sometimes you want something a little “off the beaten path,” as they say. A sneaker that’s less common. Maybe something higher quality. Maybe something less expensive.
I’ve broken in and tried over 100 pairs of shoes over the years, and I’ve owned shoes from 89 different brands (yes, I actually counted, and yes, I’m buying more to get over 100 asap because it sounds cooler).
So this list isn’t just some random shoes that look like Converse all thrown together. These are brands I love—some of the shoes I actually own, some are from brands I own (but not the specific model).
But I stand behind every recommendation here on this list, and I think you’re going to find a Converse alternative that fits what you’re looking for.
7 Best Shoes that Look Like Converse But Better
Best Overall: Cariuma OCA Low
Cariuma is a Brazilian brand and they quickly blew up in popularity because of their casual, bright style and sustainability mission.
They’re also extremely comfortable.
Cariuma offers the OCA Low, and the OCA High. To me, these shoes remind me of a Converse and Vans hybrid.
They have the rubber toe cap and flat sole reminiscent of Converse, but it’s pared back and more minimal.
I have a bright yellow pair of OCA Lows, and they’re some of the most comfortable sneakers I own. And because I got the bright yellow, I also get a ton of compliments whenever I wear them.
What I Like
- Cariuma’s sustainability mission is one of the best I’ve seen in the shoe space. They plant two trees for every purchase and have carbon-neutral shipping.
- Their selection of colors is awesome—they’re all bright, colorful, and stylish.
- The OCA Low and OCA High are extremely comfortable, plus the insole is removable.
What I Don’t Like
- I found the OCA Low to fit a little snug on my wide feet. If you have wide feet, I recommend choosing a half-size larger than usual.
What Other Reviewers Say
Cariuma has over 8,000 reviews on their site for the OCA Low, and they average out to a 4.85 out of 5 star rating. It’s uncommon to see that level of love for a brand.
Comfort comes up in many of the reviews and most people didn’t seem to have the same fit issue I did. So only take my advice in sizing up a half-step if you have wide feet like me.
The Verdict
The Cariuma OCA Low is a better sneaker than the Converse All Star and Chuck 70 in every way.
The canvas is thicker, the insole is more comfortable. And I love Cariuma’s sustainability practices.
Plus, the style is quite similar—the rubber toe cap isn’t quite as pronounced on the Cariuma’s, but it’ll give you the same retro vibe on a shoe that’s less common than a pair of Chucks.
Cariuma sneakers have a lot going for them. The quality is certainly better than Converse, plus they have an amazing sustainability mission. They offer a lot of bright and fun colors (I have a pair of the OCA Low in bright yellow, and they’re awesome), but you can opt for something more tame like white or black.
Runner Up: Palladium Pampa
I think of the Palladium Pampa as a pair of Converse All Star Classics on steroids. The origins of the company are quite similar, but where Converse went to the basketball court, Palladium went off to war.
The Pampa is what the French Foreign Legion wore throughout WWII, and you can see why with the heavy rubber lug outsoles.
Like Converse, Palladiums have a rubber toe cap that connects to the rubber outsole. But unlike Converse, the Pampa has thick lugs on the bottom which add a lot of traction and also give a sweet military aesthetic that’s a nice fit for streetwear.
What I Like
- The Pampa has a lot of traction and is very comfortable.

- Like Converse, Palladium has a lot of limited releases and collaborations with completely unique styles.
What I Don’t Like
- The outsole tread is wide, so I always get rocks stuck in it when walking.
What Do Other Reviewers Say?
A surprising number of reviewers like Palladium boots for hiking, which speaks to the comfort and durability of the shoe. I like my Pampa’s more for style, but I could see taking these for a stroll in the woods.
The Verdict
If you want a pair of Converse on steroids, take a look at the Palladium Pampa. The heavy rubber lug outsole takes on more of a military/ streetwear style that might be exactly the unique twist you’re looking for.
In terms of quality, Palladium is on par with Converse—I wouldn’t say they’re necessarily different. So your main focus should be on whether you like the style more or not.
To me, Palladium is like if Converse went super saiyan. They’re quite similar to Chucks, but they have more of a streetwear/military aesthetic because of the beefed up rubber lug outsole. I'm a fan---I give them a decent amount of wear.
Most Comfortable: Nothing New Classic Low Top
My everyday shoes have to be comfortable for long walks. Because I do a ton of walking. And I’m often reaching for my Nothing New Classic Low Top sneakers because they’re some of the most comfortable sneaks I own.
Nothing New makes their shoes entirely with recycled materials. Pair that with their carbon neutral shipping and recycled packaging, and you get a sneaker with some of the highest sustainability marks out there.
The Classic Low Top has a similar rubber toe cap to Converse, but the style is a little less retro and has a more laid-back beachy vibe.
While they’re a touch more expensive than Converse, the outsoles are stitched, rather than cemented. This basically means that they’re more durable and the sole is less likely to peel away from the upper over time.
What I Like
- The Ortholite EcoStep insoles are some of the most comfortable on this list and they actually offer decent arch support, which isn’t true for a lot of flat sole sneakers.
- The stitched construction helps a lot with the durability of the shoe, which is important if you’re looking for a daily-wear sneaker.

I was surprised when reading the reviews of Nothing New shoes how many people specifically said they gave up on Converses because they were too uncomfortable. So it seems like I’m not the only one that’s fully converted to the idea that Nothing New shoes are way more comfortable than Converse.
The Verdict
If Converse are too uncomfortable for you, definitely check out Nothing New.
I love their sustainability pledge and mission, but the biggest reason I like Nothing New sneakers is because of the Ortholite EcoStep insole. It actually offers some arch support, which makes a huge difference with a flat-soled sneaker.
While I’m still waiting on Nothing New to come out with some brighter colors, I’m still happy with the neutral-colored pair I own.
The Classic Low Top has a similar rubber toe cap to Converse, but the style is a little less retro and has a more laid-back beachy vibe.
Best Designer: Oliver Cabell Low 1
If you want a shoe that’s like Converse, but you have a little more room in your budget and are looking for something more designer level, check out a distressed Oliver Cabell Low 1.
Oliver Cabell makes all their sneakers in Italy, with Italian leather and Margom soles.
These are definitely the highest quality sneakers on the list, and they have a unique look you can’t find elsewhere.
While there are plenty of minimalist versions of the Low 1 available, I recommend a distressed colorway as a good designer alternative to Converse.
What I Like
- All the materials are Italian luxury level quality.
- These are the most durable shoes on the list just by virtue of the quality and construction.
- Oliver Cabell’s Low 1 distressed line is completely unique. .
What I Don’t Like
- They only offer full sizes, so if you’re a half-size, it can be tricky to get the right fit. I recommend sizing up if you’re a half-size.
What Do Other Reviewers Say?
The word “quality” comes up in most of the reviews for the Low 1. And it’s true: even the leather lining on these shoes is higher quality than the upper leather you can find on most shoes.

While the Oliver Cabell Low 1 is a bit of a departure from the canvas and rubber style of Converse, it’s also a massive leap in quality and luxury feel.
If you want a designer Converse alternative, be prepared to step into the world of Italian leather.
I think the distressed versions of the Oliver Cabell Low 1 make for the best Converse swap. True, they’re a bit different, but I can guarantee that these sneakers will stand out in a crowd.

Best Nike Version: Nike Blazer
I saw a kid wearing a pair of Nike Blazers in the gym and thought they were the coolest looking sneakers.
There are a ton of differences between the Nike Blazer and the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Classic, but they both have a retro vintage style that puts them in the same league.
While the Converse toe cap is rubber, the Nike Blazer toe has a suede bumper around the front. The look is somewhat similar, even if the materials are completely different.
For a vintage leather basketball sneaker, the Nike Blazer is an awesome alternative to Converse.
What I Like
- Nike mainly offers white versions, but with various colors of “swooshes.” I like the options and you can still pick a bold color and have it still be versatile in your wardrobe.
- Because they’re high tops, they offer a lot of ankle support.
- The leather creases gently and ages well. .

A lot of reviewers report struggling to put these sneakers on. They’re not easy to throw on and head out the door. So if you’re looking for something to slip into, you may want to look elsewhere.
But if you’re not afraid of lacing your sneakers every time you put them on, then it shouldn’t be an issue for you.
The Verdict
If it’s vintage basketball sneakers you’re after, the Nike Blazer is a worthy alternative to Chuck Taylors.
The Blazer is leather instead of canvas, and they have more of the traditional basketball shoe look compared to Converse.
But the bold color blocks are worth checking out, and they’re solid shoes all-around.

Best Leather Alternative: Beckett Simonon Garcia High Top
Beckett Simonon shoes have amazing leather quality considering the price. I’d put Beckett Simonon’s leather on par with Oliver Cabell’s, but the price is much lower.
The Garcia High Top is an interesting basketball sneaker design that’s a nice blend between modern and vintage. I consider it more as an alternative to the other Converse alternatives on this list rather than a direct Converse alternative because it doesn’t really share much in common with Chucks.
But it’s a fantastic sneaker worth considering if you like luxury level leather in a retro sneaker.
What I Like
- Beckett Simonon uses gold-rated calf-skin leather from Italian tanneries and the quality is phenomenal.
- These are very comfortable and durable—they’re in a totally different class quality-wise than Converse.
- There are a lot of leather variations, though they’re all in neutral tones.
What I Don’t Like
- Beckett Simonon makes their shoes to order, so you may have to wait several weeks before your sneakers arrive.
What Do Other Reviewers Say?
Quality and craftsmanship are the big reasons why reviewers choose Beckett Simonon. They’re one of my favorite brands, too. And while the waiting period can be annoying, the brand has great communication throughout the whole process so you never feel left out of the loop.
The Verdict
The Beckett Simonon Garcia High Top is a minimalist version of a retro basketball sneaker, and while it has significant differences compared to regular Chuck Taylors, it’s one of the best value for money buys you can make.
Beckett Simonon is one of my top brands I always recommend because I love their leather so much. It’s full grain calf-skin from a gold-rated tannery in Italy, and it’s so buttery smooth that you basically want to eat it.
They’re the only brand I’ve found with that level of leather at such a relatively low price.
The hand-cut, hand-finished Garcia High-Tops from Beckett Simonon combine street style, athletic aesthetics, and even a touch of military style to create a unique sneaker that’s still standard enough for any closet. Its eco-conscious, full-grain calfskin leather build is well-worth the price.
Best Budget: ZGR Canvas High Top
If your budget is tight, or if you just don’t want to spend much on a new pair of shoes, the ZGR Canvas High Top is a worthy alternative to standard Chucks.
I wouldn’t get these shoes if you plan on wearing this style more than once or twice a week.
They’re probably not going to last very long, because admittedly, the quality isn’t great.
But the price is definitely right on this pair, and they’re the best budget alternative to Converse out there right now.
It’s true that you get what you pay for, but if you can pamper your sneakers, the ZGR Canvas High Tops might be worth a look.

- There are a lot of color variants.
- They match the style of Converse very well.
- These sneakers are very reasonably priced.
What I Don’t Like
- After a few months, eyelets start to fall off and the shoes generally decline pretty rapidly.

Most reviewers were well aware that the quality of these budget Converse alternatives wasn’t going to be anything to write home about, but for many, it’s exactly what they were looking for.
A lot of reviewers mentioned that these tend to run a bit narrow, so if you have wide feet, you may want to size up a half-size from your regular fit.
The Verdict
If you already have a stable of shoes and you want the style of Converse without paying the full price, the ZGR Canvas High Tops are a nice budget friendly alternative that can save you a few bills.
I wouldn’t wear these too much more than a day or two per week if you want them to last. But if you pamper them, you can wear them through a few seasons and get that sweet Converse style at a much lower price.
I won't lie to you: the ZGR Canvas High Top isn't great. But it won't break the bank and it looks a lot like a Chuck.
Should You Just Get Converse Instead?
Just throwing this out there: in my comparison of the Converse Chuck 70 vs the All Star Classic, I found that the Chuck 70 is the better shoe in pretty much every way.
The Chuck 70 is a boosted version of the iconic high-top All Star Classics (read our review): the canvas is thicker, the midsole is a bit higher so there’s more cushion, and the ankle patch is sewn on (instead of just printed).
If you’re looking for a Converse alternative because the standard All Star Classic is uncomfortable, you may have better luck with the Chuck 70. It has a much better insole that’s far more comfortable and has more arch support.
A lot of people with flat feet find the All Star Classic unwearable. And that’s because there’s zero arch support. That can wreak havoc on your back, knees, and your feet can feel super sore after a long day of standing.
The Chuck Taylor All Star Classic is just that: a classic! It’s stylish, solid, and comfortable, and pretty iconic. I love my pair, and I wear them often. The quality is good, considering the price, but the main reason to get these sneakers is for the style.
If that’s you, the Chuck 70 offers some relief, though I still think Cariuma and Palladium do a better job with arch support.
However, if it’s the style of Converse you’re after, no brand is going to do it better than Converse.

While I like my Converse, I think there are better brands out there offering similar looks with better quality and more comfort.
My top Converse alternative is Cariuma. I love their OCA Low sneaker—especially the colorful variations.

Are Converse shoes good for flat feet?
No, because Converse sneakers have flat soles and very little arch support, they aren’t a great option if you’re a flat footed person. However, you can get the Chuck 70 and add your own custom orthotic, which will solve the arch support issue and give you some comfort while maintaining the Converse style.
Why are they called “Chucks”?
Converse are often called Chucks because Chuck Taylor, a famous basketball player in the 1920’s and Converse shoe salesman first brought them to the public eye. The style of shoe became known as a “Chuck Taylor,” and that’s since been shortened to “Chucks.”
Why do Chucks have holes in the side?
You’ll notice that Chuck Taylor sneakers have two holes on the interior part of the shoe. These are for added breathability and to keep the level of foot sweat to a minimum. Canvas sneakers can trap in foot sweat, which would lead to blisters and discomfort. So having added ventilation helps avoid that issue.
